Gottlieb Haunted House Classic Pinball Machine, Nice
This game was in the arcade section of a bowling alley for its first three years when I bought it, so I’m the second owner. I did a little paint touch up on the cellar level where the ball drops in at that time. For the next 35 years it has been at my parent’s house where it got very light play. I recently moved it to my house where we did a thorough take down and cleaning. All 8 flippers, 4 pop bumpers, 3 kick targets, kick bumpers and other solenoids were disassembled, cleaned, rebuilt and adjusted as necessary so everything is working properly. I replaced the old spider web targets with 9 new ones. Also, the original design uses a Ni-Cd battery on the motherboard to hold up the high scores and preferences saved in RAM. In time all of these batteries eventually leak and cause corrosion on the motherboard. To prevent this, I removed the battery and substituted the RAM chip with a non-volatile circuit which eliminates the need for a battery while still remembering the high scores and preferences. Other than that, everything else is original. The head glass is in excellent condition with no peeling or flaking. The playfield is in very good overall condition. There is that wear where the ball enters the lower playfield, some where the ball pops up to the attic level, and a little wear at the “Welcome” word at the very top. I’ve run the internal diagnostics and all switches, lights, and solenoids are working correctly. A copy of the complete user manual and schematics is included. The cabinet is in very good overall condition as well. There are some scuffs and scrapes on the sides, mainly on the left side. It is all original — I did not touch up any of these imperfections. The sides of the head are in excellent condition. The inside cabinet has been vacuumed and the playfield underside is clean. This game has been kept in a non-smoking home. Haunted House is a really fun game to play. The music fits the theme well. In general, completing something enables something else on another level. Like completing the attic drop targets three times lights the special in the cellar, and completing the cellar targets twice lights the special in the attic. Special is programmed for a free ball. You can get to the cellar from the main playfield using the secret passage or trap door under the stairs, or drop down from the attic secret passage. Your multiplier increases every time you change levels and applies to your monster bonus displayed under the main playfield. There are various things to do to enable double scoring as well. It has a lot going on. Because three of the 1 through 5 targets are kick targets, the action on the main playfield is quite fast. Haunted House would make a great addition to any game room!
