HIGH SPEED Pinball Machine Williams 1986 2472
The High Speed pinball machine, designed by Steve Ritchie and released by Williams Electronics in January 1986, is a classic and highly regarded game in the pinball community. Here’s a detailed description of its features and gameplay. Artwork: Mark Sprenger and Python Anghelo. Music and Sound: Bill Parod, Steve Ritchie, Eugene Jarvis, and Larry DeMar. Production Run: 17,080 units. Theme: The game is based on a real-life police chase involving Steve Ritchie, who was pursued by the police at 146 mph in his Porsche 928. Objective: The main goal is to turn the stoplight from green to yellow to red by hitting the nine stoplight targets (three of each color). Once all targets are lit, the player must shoot the ball up the ramp to “run the red light” and start the police chase mode. Multiball: Achieved by either shooting the ramp again or lighting all nine stoplight targets and then shooting the eject hole. During multiball, players can increase the Hideout Jackpot, which carries over from game to game until won. Freeways: Located in the left and right orbits, denoted by spinners. Shooting these increases the Freeway value and can eventually light an extra ball. Bonus Multiplier: Shooting the ball up the ramp increases the bonus multiplier from 2X to 5X, with additional shots activating the BONUS HELD. Standup Targets: 5 (3-bank). Traffic Light: Located on the ramp. Rotating Police Beacon Light: On top of the backbox. First Pinball to Play a Complete Song: The game features a full song during gameplay. Alpha-Numeric Displays: First Williams pinball game to use these displays. Auto Percentaging: First use in a solid-state game for replay scores. Multiball Jackpot: First game to have a jackpot available only during multiball. Operator Report: First solid-state game with this feature. Popularity: Due to its innovative features and engaging gameplay, High Speed remains a beloved pinball machine among enthusiasts. Its success led to a sequel, “The Getaway: High Speed II, ” released in 1992. High Speed’s combination of thrilling gameplay, innovative features, and a compelling backstory makes it a standout in the world of pinball machines.
